The Plough

The Plough has been dispensing food & refreshments to weary travellers since 1498.

We’re honoured to continue that tradition, with the best local produce and warmest of Yorkshire welcomes.

The bar

You can expect the warmest of welcomes when visiting the bar at the Plough. Whilst the food side is extremely important to us, the pub bar is the heart beat of our local community. Expect to hear lots of banter, lively discussions and putting world to rights at the bar!

Our bar tenders, Jordan and Jane are always on hand to provide you with a perfect pint or perhaps a drink for the driver. Serving local ales from Helmsely Brewery, Black Sheep and Theakstons to name just a few. Perfect with our bar snacks and nibbles. Snuggle up by our real log fires when there’s a nip in the air or when the weather is good, relax outside in our garden.

Lindsey’s carefully curated wine list is always available throughout the bar, with a wide selection of wines and fizz available by the glass.

We serve freshly made artisan coffee which is also available to take away.

Our bar is extremely dog friendly and we welcome you to bring along your four legged friends – doggie treats are always on hand!”

Our Restaurant

Richard works single-handedly in the kitchen, cooking for our guests with a more personal touch.

We serve timeless, hearty dishes with our own modern twist. It’s less about ‘weird and wonderful’ – and more about comfort and satisfaction.

Lindsey passionately provides the front-of-house service, with extenstive knowledge on the perfect pairings to each dish. This includes a highly considered wine list, including many hidden gems from England.

History

The Plough is located in the village of Wombleton, in stunning countryside between the Howardian Hills and North Yorkshire Moors. Wombleton itself is an ancient village, with records dating back as far back as 1086.

The building is Grade II Listed with Historic England. The oldest part of the building, built as long ago as 1498, is now the dining room. Monks were known to serve their brews through the small window back in the 1400 & 1500’s.

The dining room still contains many of the original features, with low ceiling, exposed wooden beams and stonework.

What is now the bar area is located in the ‘newer’ part of the building, built in 1852. Many of the original features are still retained here too, with beautiful exposed beams and working fireplace.

Richard & Lindsey

“We’re proud to be able to take the reigns of such an important piece of history here in Wombleton.

Our own story started some twenty years ago, when we opened Artisan in East Yorkshire. This was followed by Rascills near Easingwold in 2016, and then later The Hovingham Inn in 2019.

Our food offering is naturally the cornerstone of what we’re about. We strive to put new spin on timeless classics; the stuff you really want to eat. Big flavour. Generous portions. Real comfort.

We’re very lucky to be able to do so with such fine seasonal produce on our doorstep, along with some truly amazing brewers and winemakers.

It’s equally very important to us that the pub stays a pub, as a place where anyone can enjoy a quick drink or two, and spend time with others.

Whether you’re dining with us, or enjoying a fine Yorkshire pint, we look forward to welcoming you soon.”
